DIY Molding and Glass Shelves

{Molding and glass shelves}

When we bought our apartment last year, it was pretty much turn key. The previous owner had moved out very early prior to selling it so much of the work needed to be done was cleaning and painting. There were a few projects that we did just to upgrade or make it our own style (see here and here).

One project we decided to do almost immediately was update the shelves in the bathroom. The shelving was so ugly and wobbly I got rid of it before I even knew what I was going to replace it with. Honestly, anything would have been better, so I wasn't too concerned with the replacement. The old shelves looked something like this:

However, the glass was in good condition and perfectly sized to the nook needing the shelving so I kept it just in case. While walking around Home Depot a few weeks later, I came up with the idea of using molding! It is pretty simple to make in any small nook. Here is what you need to make molding and glass shelves:

Supplies
Molding, with at least one flat edge (1/4" flatness)
Level
Nails
Hammer
Glass shelves
Paint
Blue painters tape

I think the directions are pretty self emplanitory but just in case...
1. Cut the molding to the size (depth and width) of the nook you want to shelve. You can either cut the molding yourself with a small saw or have the supply store do it for you.
{Cut molding}

2. Space out your shelves to your taste and need for your space.
3. Nail 3 pieces of molding on the sides and back of your nook. Be sure to have the flat side of the molding facing upwards. The flat side is where you will be resting the glass on so be sure to pick a molding with at least a 1/4" flat edge so there will be enough space for the glass to rest. If you want to get fancy with it, cut the ends of the molding at a 45 degree angle to produce more finished looking corners.

4. Repeat for all shelves.
5. Tape around the molding.
6. Paint the molding your desired color. Let dry for the appropriate time listed on the paint then remove the tape.

Finished product! Just accessorize and enjoy!

I think a lucite jewelry box would be a great accessory for this space! Has anyone seen a great one lately?
